Brown bearsKatmai, Alaska
Tour descriptionEverybody knows the pictures of these huge brown bears at Brooks Falls catching the upstream jumping salmon. Well we won't be doing that but something completely different and more worthwhile!
We'll be going to a more remote part of Katmai National Park with the highest population of brown bears. There are no boardwalks or platforms there from which to photograph the bears; no, we'll be on land right amongst them. In fact that they are just a couple of meters away from you and are completely wild, makes this trip a truly amazing photography tour & adventure.
Coastal Katmai is located west of Kodiak Island, along the shores of the Shelikof Strait. From Kodiak a floatplane will take us during an incredible scenic flight over Alaska's beautiful and untamed landscape to our final location; a boat within the secluded confines of Geographic Harbor.
The boat not only gives us a great flexibility if we need to change location because of bear activity, but it will also serve as just our place to eat, sleep and download our pictures. Each day our guide (who is also the captain of the boat) will bring us ashore with a small skiff. He's been running this operation for years and years now and has daily interactions with these bears.
The timing of this tour is based to coincide with the autumn run of the salmon. The magnificent scenery offers a particularly appealing element to the photographic opportunities.
The trip is limited to 6 guests (plus me).
Join me on this once in a lifetime bear experience!
Day 1Depart from home and arrival in Anchorage. Depending on your flight schedule you should plan on arriving into Anchorage by late afternoon. We will meet in the lobby of our hotel at 7:00 PM, go for dinner (this dinner is not included) and go through the final details of the upcoming trip.
Very important:It is absolutely crucial to arrive in Anchorage this day. The next morning we have a very early flight to Kodiak and you don't want to miss this flight and the connecting floatplane flight! If you miss the flights, it would take you a at least one day to catch up, you would loose a day of valuable photography and you would have to pay for all additional costs & charges.
If you wish, and want to play it more safely, you may want to consider arriving a day earlier in Anchorage. This would give you more time should you have any delays and you could relax from the travel in and around the hotel. We can help you make any additional hotel arrangements.
Day 2After a short – but good – night sleep we have to catch our very early flight to Kodiak. When we arrive in Kodiak we'll check in with the floatplane company and have breakfast right after this at a local restaurant (this breakfast is included). After breakfast you have some time to buy some groceries should you need to.
We cannot predict the exact time we'll be able to fly to the boat. This is determined by the floatplane company depending on the weather. If the weather permits we should arrive in time for a late lunch on the boat followed by our first outing with the bears!
Day 3, 4, 5 & 6The next four days will be similar. Depending on the weather, bear activity and tides we'll go out and spend our day's right amongst the bears. We'll either have lunch back on the boat or in the field.
If we want we could ask the captain to take the boat and go look for horned puffin and stellar sea lions.
Day 7Before we leave the boat and Katmai, we might be able to have one more short stay with the bears. This will all depend on weather and the flight schedule of the floatplane. Once in Kodiak we'll fly back to Anchorage. We should arrive back in Anchorage around 5:30 pm and this is the moment where the trip ends.
If you want you can make flight arrangements for that night or the following day. If you're staying over that night in Anchorage, please make your own hotel arrangements.
